Kate Armstrong has a one-of-kind background - she attended a Nautical Science program in St. John’s NL and worked on a variety of ships over a six-year period. Following that she completed a three-year Naval Architecture (NA) program. Since graduating from the NA program in 1988, she has worked in a number of diverse marine industries – as a Naval Architect with Peter Hatfield in Vancouver; a hull surveyor with Transport Canada; technical advisor/Naval Architect with BC Ferries; technical advisor with SeaLink; marine surveyor in her own company and, currently, as Manager Regulatory and Compliance with Seaspan Marine. Through the course of her career, her sea-time has given her insight into the operational aspects of vessels, while her studies in Naval Architecture have given her technical skills, as well as the ability to communicate clearly with others inside and outside the engineering profession regarding matters in the marine industry
